I have never been religious, but have a strong sense of compassion for my fellow human beings. I believed that science rather than a god could interpret the mysteries and wonders of the universe, and yet it took me many years to realise there is could be a name for this, and that I could be described as a 'Humanist'.
I understand 'Humanism' as a core of important beliefs; - Humanists look to science to understand the world we live in (rather than a deity). - Humanists believe that it is important to respect others - Humanists prefer the idea of a secular state - one in which religion and government are separate.
I believe that most people I have met in my life share beliefs that are very similar to mine. As such I detail my beliefs here to give clarity for couples thinking about Humanism and trying to work out what a Humanist Celebrant might believe in, but I do not normally try to describe what I believe or preach to others about Humanism or try to convert people to my beliefs.
I believe that people are entitled to hold their own opinions, beliefs and superstitions about the world.
